How to Install Android Q Beta on Asus Zenfone 5Z [Developer Preview]

Android 10 Q Beta 3 is now available on more devices than any previous Android Beta build ever. A full release is expected after this summer fall, but Google is announcing new major features for its 10th version of Android at Google I/O 2019. Android Q offers system UI changes like dark mode, call quality, and improved gestures. Android Q Beta 3 has been released for 21 devices which includes all the major smartphone OEMs like Sony, Samsung, Pixel, Oppo, Vivo, Xioami, Essential, Nokia, Realme, Asus, Huawei, and Tecno Mobile.

Android Q Features:

The more important part is that the latest Android platform brings new accessibility option ‘Live Caption’. There are also huge improvements to the Android Security and Privacy models. The Android Q brings native system-wide dark mode option, theme settings, network stability, improved gesture navigation control without a back button, etc. Facebook Messenger like Chat Bubbles option is also new in this version.

One of the best and useful feature has been included called Project Mainline. The Digital Wellbeing app now offers parental control via the Family Link app in the Google Play Store. Whereas the Focus Mode is quite similar to the Do Not Disturb option. It will let you select apps and turn off the notifications which are irritating you.

Android Q Beta 3 Build: Changelog

  • First released version: May 7th, 2019
    • Bugs: SD cards with the exFAT format aren’t supported.
    • There is no beep when the volume up or volume down buttons are pressed. The beep still works with other functions.

How to Install Android Q Beta on Asus Zenfone 5Z [Developer Preview]

Steps to opt-in to Android Q Beta on Asus Zenfone 5Z

Before installing the Android Q Beta firmware on your device, please note that:

  • The firmware is for ZenFone 5Z (ZS620KL) and is provided by Asus (not by Google).
  • Android Q Beta updates are not as stable as official Asus stable firmware updates. By installing this update, you accept the potential risks.
  • Make sure that installing the system image on a device removes all personal data from the device, so you should backup your data first.
  • Please follow the instructions given below to opt-in via Fastboot mode. If you require any technical support, feel free to visit your nearest Asus customer service center.

For the Windows Platform:

  • Please make sure the battery level is more than 50-percent to skip any accidental shutdowns during flashing.
    • Press and hold down the Power + Volume Up buttons until the device reboots.
    • Upon reboot, you’ll see Fastboot Mode appear.
    • Connect your Asus ZenFone 5Z to your PC via a USB cable.
  • Decompress the Android Q image file. Double click on “update_image.bat” and it will start flashing the image command. [Don’t unplug the USB cable and ensure a stable connection between your Asus ZenFone 5Z and PC during the flashing process.]
  • When the flash finishes, a ‘Download Complete’ message will appear on the terminal. Hit the Enter key on the keyboard to restart your ZenFone 5Z.
    • If an ‘Update image failed’ message appears on the terminal, the flash was unsuccessful. In this case, please try again or you can report the issue to Asus.

For the Ubuntu Platform:

  • Please ensure the battery level is higher than 50-percent to skip any accidental shutdowns during flashing.

  • When the flash finishes, a ‘Download Complete’ message will appear on the terminal. Hit the Enter key on the keyboard to restart your ZenFone 5Z.
    • If an ‘Update image failed’ message appears on the terminal, the flash was unsuccessful. In this case, please try again or report the issue to Asus.

Steps to opt-out and revert back to Android P on Zenfone 5Z

Please follow the steps given below to opt-out via Fastboot mode. If you require any technical support, please visit your nearest Asus customer service center.

For the Windows Platform:

  • Please ensure the battery level is higher than 50%.
    • Press and hold down the Power + Volume Up buttons until the device reboots.
    • Upon reboot, you’ll see Fastboot Mode appear.
    • Then connect your ZenFone 5Z to your PC via a USB cable.
  • Decompress the Android P image file. Double click on “update_image.bat” and it will start flash image command.
    • Do not unplug the USB cable and ensure a stable connection between your ZenFone 5Z and PC during the flashing process.
  • When the flash finishes, a ‘Download Complete’ message will appear on the terminal. Hit the Enter key on the keyboard to reboot your ZenFone 5Z to Android P.
    • If an ‘Update image failed’ message appears on the terminal, the flash was unsuccessful. In this case, please try again or report the issue to Asus.
